Most Important Bare Acts for AIBE: Complete List & Exam Rules You Must Know

The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is an open-book exam — but “open book” comes with strict conditions. Carrying the wrong material, or the right material in the wrong condition, can get your books confiscated at the exam hall door. Here’s a complete breakdown of the rules and the bare acts you actually need to carry.

Rules for Carrying Bare Acts

  • Only plain Bare Acts are allowed. Books containing short notes, commentaries, or synopses are strictly prohibited. Always check the cover page of any copy before buying — publishers often print “with short notes” or “with commentary,” and those versions will not be permitted inside.
  • Photocopies and printouts are acceptable. If you don’t own a physical copy of a specific Act — Company Law or Income Tax law are common examples — you’re allowed to download the official bare act text and carry a clean printout instead of buying a full book.
  • Keep your books clean. Light underlining or small pencil marks are usually tolerated, but heavy highlighting, handwritten notes, or sticky-note annotations are discouraged. If your copies already have such markings, erase or cover them before the exam. Invigilators can and do stop heavily marked books from entering the hall, so it’s safer to carry a fresh, unmarked copy.
